About this trek

A wild, roadless route through the Barun valley — cloud forest, hanging glaciers and the colossal black pyramid of Makalu, the world's fifth-highest peak, with almost nobody else on the trail.

Makalu sits inside a vast conservation area east of Everest, reached only on foot through one of Nepal's last untouched watersheds. The Barun valley climbs from sub-tropical jungle to high glacial moraine in a few days, and the wildlife and plant life along the way are as much the draw as the peak itself.

Our 22-day route works up to Makalu Base Camp beneath the south face, with time to acclimatise and explore the upper valley. Remote, committing and quietly spectacular.
